MaliKatiena: Integrated Development
Partners: LWR and Association Mailienne pour la Promotion du Sahel (AMAPROS)
The inhabitants of the Fatine area in the Katiena Sub-Region of Mali are faced with progressive degradation of the local environment, entailing reduced agricultural productivity and shortages of timber and firewood.
GOAL: To help the population of Fatine, Katiena Sub-Region, Segou Region to restore their natural environment and to improve their living conditions.
OBJECTIVES: LWRs partner, AMAPROS will:
" Guide the local population in instituting improved natural resource management.
" Increase family incomes by granting loans to women to initiate money-generating activities.
" Improve nutrition and reduce womens drudgery by promoting consumption of local vegetables, planting two hectares of vegetables, creating four village wells and installing 10 karity oil presses.
" Provide courses covering basic literacy skills and the rights and duties of Malian citizens..
Total Project Support: $214,253 through 2002.
Hunger Projects : Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Niger, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda.
