NigerKonni: Konni Vegetable Production Promotion Project

Partners: LWR and the Association Eau pour le Sahel (AES)

The livelihoods of the people of the Konni region of Niger are particularly affected by the cyclical drought and the lack of infrastructure resulting in insufficient agricultural production and unstable income. An estimated 70 percent of the economically active population also migrate to neighboring countries every year adding to the strains and responsibilities of those left behind.

GOAL: AES, an existing partner of LWR, was established in 1993 with the main goal of providing improved water services to the rural population. It has previously received a grant from LWR in support of its organizational capacity strengthening activities and construction of over 150 village and public wells in 11 different sites around the region. AES recognizes the need to further provide potable water to populations in 16 more villages and enhance the economic opportunities for women. LWR will continue to support AES to achieve technical, programmatic and financial autonomy through training in program design and implementation and planning for organizational sustainability.

OBJECTIVES: LWRs partner, AES will:

" Increase access to potable water in 16 villages.

" Increase vegetable and cash crop production.

" Twenty percent reduction in rural exodus through the improvement of economic opportunities.

" Socio-economic equity and reduction of womens work load with improved access to potable water and available credit for diversified income-generating activities.

" Improve capacity of AES in program design and implementation.
